Extraction columns

Plants for separation and purification in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields of mixtures through the liquid-liquid extraction process.

The liquid-liquid extraction columns in borosilicate glass 3.3, stainless steel, glass-lined, Hastelloy, and other alloys, operate on the principle of the passage of more or less soluble components from one stream to another, through the contact and countercurrent mixing of two or more liquids.

The contact of the two streams considered as light and heavy phases occurs along a vertical column, and there are 3 different systems available to make this contact effective.
The internal components can be made of metallic alloys or PTFE and teflon-coated steel for service with particularly aggressive compounds.

Various elements are available to complete the columns such as terminal caps, head and bottom separators, pneumatic or manual control valves, injectors, sheaths, pumps, and motor groups.

Complete ready to use systems can be provided with CE, PED, and ATEX certification.

Standard technical features

  • Design pressure:
    • -1 ÷ +0.5 bar (borosilicate glass)
    • -1 ÷ +6 bar (stainless steel, glass-lined, Hastelloy)
  • Design temperature:
    • -30 ÷ +185°C (borosilicate glass)
    • -30 ÷ +250°C (stainless steel, glass-lined, Hastelloy)
  • Diameter: DN50 ÷ 400
  • Flow rates as the sum of the two fluids: 0 ÷ 3500 lt/h

Extraction columns

Types

Three different systems are available for the liquid-liquid extraction process:

  • Pulsed system with perforated plates, with a maximum diameter of DN150. Mixing is activated by a piston pump located at the base of the column. This system is suitable for liquids with significant differences in density and viscosity and low flow rates.
  • System with rotating plates, with a maximum diameter of DN200, smooth, with inclined profile or turbine that mixes the phases thanks to the centrifugal effect and are particularly suitable for high viscosity systems or with poorly miscible liquids.
  • System with perforated plates with a movable pack. The entire plate pack for the entire height of the column has a variable vertical oscillating movement in amplitude and frequency allowing high versatility. This system is able to ensure high flow rates with operational flexibility with high viscosity liquids and with suspended solids or foam-forming.
